Below the Surface

Concept

At depth, sound disappears. What remains is vision — sharpened, slow, and complete. This work imagines a wedding ceremony taking place beneath the ocean. Not the surface, where light scatters and noise carries, but the deep: where light falls in fragments from somewhere far above, and everything that exists is seen with absolute clarity.

Design Approach

Color was not the tool. Light was. Iridescent origami lights were selected for their ability to catch and refract light in the way water does — shifting between blue, violet, and green depending on angle and distance, never fixed, never fully graspable. They hang at varying depths throughout the space, mimicking the way light from the surface filters down through layers of water. The surrounding greenery recedes into darkness, as the deep ocean floor does. What floats in that darkness are the lights — each one a fragment of the world above, seen from below. The result is a space that asks for stillness. Not quiet as absence, but quiet as attention. The same quality that depth demands of those inside it.
